TRICARE benefits for families begins the day the sponsor is activated if mobilization orders are for more than 30 days. Under the demonstration, for Reserve families using TRICARE Extra or Standard, the TRICARE annual deductible will be waived.

Early Benefits for Reservists – Before Deployment
Effective July 23, 2004, Department of Defense (DoD) announced the start of a new temporary program authorized under section 703 of the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2004 which provides members of the Reserve Component (RC) activated in support of a contingency operation for more than 30 days and family members “early” access to TRICARE medical and dental benefits.

Effective Nov. 6, 2003, TRICARE eligibility was temporarily extended to 180 days for the Transitional Assistance Management Program (TAMP).

TRICARE Reserve Select – After Deployment
TRICARE Reserve Select is a premium-based TRICARE health plan offered for purchase by certain members of the Reserve and National Guard Components after release from active duty. Their active duty service must have been in support of a contingency on or after September 11, 2001. Soldiers must follow a three-step process to get TRS coverage:
- Enter into the Service Agreement.
- Execute the Service Agreement.
- Purchase TRS.
