Army Casualty & Memorial Affairs Operation Center
Their mission is to assist Army families in an emotionally stressful time of bereavement. Their website is designed to assist Army families and the many dedicated professionals trying to aid those families. The offer a very detailed Frequently Asked Questions page that covers everything from how the Army notifies the next of kin about a casualty, to what the Army can do to support the soldier’s family.
Military Severely Injured Joint Support Operations Center
Soldiers or their families can call the center for any kind of help including assistance with medical appointments, coordinating services with the VA or arranging for transportation. Call (888) 774-1361.
SGLI Traumatic Injury Insurance
Severely injured warriors in Iraq and Afghanistan may get cash payments, of $25,000 to $100,000, under a rider to Servicemembers’ Group Life Insurance. The payments will be retroactive, to Oct. 7, 2001, to cover members severely wounded in Afghanistan or Iraq. Military.com has posted a detailed article on both programs.
Fisher House
Because members of the military and their families are stationed worldwide and must often travel great distances for specialized medical care, Fisher House Foundation donates “comfort homes,” built on the grounds of major military and VA medical centers. These homes enable family members to be close to a loved one at the most stressful times – during the hospitalization for an unexpected illness, disease, or injury. They offer many other support services to the families of military.
Army Wives
Offers additional casualty assistance resources and links not only to the Army Casualty & Memorial Affairs Center, but also to the Casualty Assistance groups of each of the other Military Services (Air Force, Navy, Marines).
Homes for Our Troops
A nonprofit organization strongly committed to helping those who have selflessly given to their country and have returned home with serious disabilities and injuries. They are dedicated to the building and remodeling of handicapped accessible homes for severely wounded veterans. Call 1-866-7-TROOPS.
